I need not have prepared a formal presentation for the seminar on stress at work last week. Debate was so well informed and engaged, the presentation was soon abandoned. The trigger for delegate participation was a reference to occupational health, and its failure to facilitate early returns to work in many cases. WHAT IS PERSONAL DATA?

Personal data are (NB rather than is, a dry subject after all) information. Any business is likely to have personal data. The legal definition is important because the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) and the GDPR, which replaces the DPA next May, only apply to personal data. They do not cover information that falls outside the legal definition. Broadly speaking, personal data relates to a living individual whom the holder of the data can identify. WHY IS DATA PROTECTION IMPORTANT?

Did you register with the Information Commissioner's Office years ago as a holder of personal data? Have you done anything about it since? Or have you assumed there was nothing else to do? On 25 May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into force. The new law will tighten up the compliance requirements for holders of personal data and increase the enforcement powers of the Information Commissioner.
